Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said he believes a federal judge should be removed from a case involving Trump University because of his Hispanic heritage—remarks the head of the nation's largest association of Hispanic lawyers calls bigoted.
Trump has long waged a war of words on U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel for his handling of the fraud lawsuits filed against the candidate's failed business venture. In the past, Trump has implied the judge is biased as a Mexican, even though Curiel was born and raised in the U.S. On Thursday, Trump escalated his attacks by saying Curiel has a conflict of interest because of his "Mexican heritage" and his membership in a California-based Latino lawyers association.
"I'm building a wall. It's an inherent conflict of interest," Trump was quoted in the Wall Street Journal. http://on.wsj.com/1UjrlpK
Hispanic National Bar Association President Robert Maldonado responded by saying Trump "continues to belligerently inject bigotry and divisive politics into the 2016 presidential contest." He added that the candidate's continued attacks on the judge show a "dangerous disregard" for the separate branches of government.
"His irrelevant reference to Judge Curiel's ethnicity is an attack on all of the honorable diverse members of our judiciary who serve this country," Maldonado said. "As the presumptive presidential nominee of a major political party, his attempts to undermine the integrity of our federal judicial system are truly unprecedented and place undue stress on our democracy."
Maldonado called on Trump to apologize for his remarks—just as he had in February, when the candidate said Curiel was "hostile" to his side because "he's Hispanic." http://bit.ly/1O7CihD
